Dating to the mid to late-1920s, this vintage brooch features a variation on the stylized flower-basket motif common in Art Deco jewellery – a basket of fruits. A mix of grapes, oranges, a banana and a sprinkling of vine leaves are worked in pearlescent enamels, nestling in a ribbed basket filled with a clear (or smoky) enamel.
The enamel has the look of cloisonné but the brooch has been pre-formed, with details in the hollows giving a texture to the fruits and basket. The metal has a distinctly coppery glint, with a white metal safety-pin style clasp fitted on the reverse.
Dimensions: This is a relatively small brooch, 3.7 cm wide by 2.1 cm high (1.5″ x 0.8″)
Marks: None
Condition: Good vintage condition overall. There is darkened crazing at the tip of the banana (far right) but as the brooch is small, it appears worse in the enlarged pictures than it really is. The rest of the enamel is bright and intact, with the pin closing securely.
