This is a simple but lovely 1940s vintage brooch in sterling silver, featuring bright-cut engraving enhanced with fine lines.
It is a large disc shape with a feathery frond swirling down from a flower and covering most of the surface. Though there is a fair amount of engraving large areas have a reflective mirror-like surface that works very prettily with the engraving (but makes it difficult to photograph!). The brooch is slightly domed – a touch higher in the centre. The edge is scalloped and finished with a chequer-like stamped border.
It has a 1930s/40s style safety clasp and is 2″ (5 cm) in diameter. It weighs 13 grams and is marked “STERLING” with a maker’s mark “B” in a hexagon but I have not be able to identify the maker.
It is in very good vintage condition with no dents or damage of any kind – any odd looking spots in the pics are reflections – only very light surface scratching on the front. Scratching is a little heavier on the back, but consistent with age.
