This is a dazzling three-strand vintage necklace of aurora borealis crystal and carnival glass beads – the best example of a carnival glass necklace I’ve seen.
The crystals have a jewel-coloured rather than pastel aurora borealis coating, with a smokey-grey undertone. The carnival glass beads are textured much like crushed velvet, with a wonderful iridescence. The beads are interspersed throughout with clear crystal spacers and graduate down in size towards a bead-embellished slide-in clasp.
Altogether, the contrast of textures, reflections and colours is quite spectacular, and the sparkle truly remarkable.
Dimensions
17″ long, measuring by the shortest strand.
Marks
There are no maker’s or other marks.
Condition
Overall, this necklace is in excellent vintage condition.
There are very slight signs of wear to the aurora coating along some facet edges, noticeable on close inspection only, and the silvering on the back of the clasp is discoloured but not corroded. The necklace does not appear to have been restrung at any time and the clasp is in good working order, snapping firmly into place.
