This is a very dainty vintage sterling silver and enamel pansy brooch – a tiny pansy most likely meant to be worn as a pretty accent on a collar or lapel. It is just 1. 8 cm wide by 2 cm high (0.75″by just over 0.75″).
The silver is textured with lines and folds depicting the petals and bumps at the centre of the pansy, which show through the enamel and give it dimension. The enamel is mostly white with purple, with a splash of yellow and orange at the centre. It is edged all around with a thin border of silver and fitted with a rollover safety clasp – tiny, like the brooch.
The brooch is marked “STERLING” with an unidentified maker’s mark. It looks like a raised “L” inside a triangle on it’s side and may be a whole or partial maker’s mark. I suspect the brooch is most likely Scandinavian because of the many similar pansy brooches from the region, although these are usually marked “925S” rather than “Sterling.”
It is is very good to excellent vintage condition with no damage at all to the enamel. There is a sort of faint ridge of enamel along the top but this is original to the brooch and is underneath the smooth surface. The clasp is in good working order.
